Pharmacology
Ibogaine and noribogaine: an acute phase and a longer tail
Ibogaine is a psychoactive alkaloid associated with the iboga plant. After administration, the body metabolizes some ibogaine into noribogaine, a metabolite that may remain relevant after the most intense subjective effects have eased. The pharmacology is complex and involves multiple receptor systems; a concise background is available in the Ibogaine reference overview.
That complexity is one reason short, simple claims about “resetting” a person are not a substitute for evidence. The acute experience may include altered perception, nausea, impaired coordination, fatigue, anxiety, or distress. Programs may describe a long overnight or multi-day observation window, but the meaningful question is whether the plan accounts for a person’s health history, medications, hydration, electrolytes, and changing condition—not merely whether the room is comfortable.
Luxury describes the surroundings. Medical safeguards describe the preparation, observation, escalation plan, and boundaries around risk.
